A translation can open correctly, look tidy, and still miss part of a chapter. It can contain every chapter and still change a crucial number. File completeness, language quality, and comfortable reading are separate checks.
Review the downloaded book in that order: confirm what is there, compare what matters, then test how it reads. You do not need to give every paragraph equal attention to find common problems, but you should not mistake a good sample for proof of the whole book.
Check chapter completeness before polishing sentences
Compare the source and result chapter lists, including introductions, appendices, notes, and any afterword you expect to keep. Open each major section, not just its entry in the contents. Confirm that it starts and ends where it should.
Use distinctive phrases near chapter boundaries to locate corresponding passages. Translation changes length, so equal page counts or file sizes are not reliable completeness tests. A bilingual edition is naturally longer because it includes both languages.
Within sampled chapters, compare the sequence of paragraphs. Look for repeated passages, abrupt jumps, a missing dialogue exchange, or text joined across a heading. If you find one missing section, expand the structural check before spending time improving the prose.
Search names and terms across the book
Create a short list of recurring character names, place names, titles, and technical terms. Check their first appearance, a middle occurrence, and a later occurrence. Search alternative spellings if you spot inconsistency.
Do not replace every variation automatically. A title may change with a character's role; a technical word may have more than one meaning. Compare context before treating variation as an error.
Translation instructions can communicate preferred wording, but they are not a guarantee. PDF Craft's EPUB workflow lets you add names, terminology, and tone preferences before submitting. After downloading, verify the terms that actually matter to your reading.
Give quantities and meaning a separate pass
Read several passages for who acts, who speaks, and what is claimed. A fluent sentence can reverse a negation, turn a possibility into a certainty, or attach a pronoun to the wrong person.
Compare dates, amounts, percentages, units, references, and ranges with the source. Check the label around a number, not only the digits. A correct value assigned to a different category changes meaning just as surely as a wrong value.
For nonfiction, select a definition, a conclusion, and an exception or limitation. For fiction, select dialogue, narration, and an emotionally important scene. Include a difficult passage rather than checking only the easiest pages.
Inspect images, tables, links, and notes together
An image should remain connected to the text that explains it. Check its caption, surrounding paragraph, and any labels embedded in the picture. Do not assume image text was translated because the body text was.
For tables, match values with headings and units. For notes, follow a marker to its complete explanation and test return navigation where available. Open a few internal chapter links and external references. A visible link label does not prove the target still works.
The technical OCR review checklist is useful when the original came from a scanned PDF. Separate source-recognition mistakes from translation mistakes: correcting a fluent target sentence cannot restore text that disappeared before translation.
Use a review log with a clear stopping rule
Record chapter or source location, issue, severity, and action. Prioritize missing material, changed meaning, wrong quantities, and broken references over cosmetic spacing.
| Check | Suitable scope |
|---|---|
| Major sections present | Whole-book structural check |
| Names and key terms | Search across the book plus contextual samples |
| Ordinary reading quality | Contrasting passages and continuous pages |
| Quotation or consequential claim | Exact source comparison |
| Public-facing edition | Full appropriate editorial review |
If several examples share a fault, inspect the rest of that category. If a display issue appears in one application, try the same file in another reader before rerunning translation. See translated EPUB troubleshooting for that distinction.
For private reading, you might proceed once the structure is sound and important uncertainties are marked. For publication or formal quotation, plan stronger review and confirm the necessary rights. Keep the source, result, and issue notes together so a later correction does not depend on remembering what looked wrong last week.
