An Arabic or Hebrew paragraph can look mostly correct while a URL, number, or English name appears in the wrong place. That is not always a translation mistake. Mixed right-to-left and left-to-right text needs a reading system and document structure that handle direction correctly.
This guide is an acceptance check for a file you intend to read. It does not promise that any particular source EPUB, layout, or reading device will handle every right-to-left case without correction.
Distinguish text direction from alignment
A paragraph aligned to the right is not necessarily a correctly structured right-to-left paragraph. Alignment controls where lines sit; direction affects how mixed text and punctuation are arranged.
The Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm describes how text with different directional properties is displayed. The W3C's direction guidance explains why structural direction matters in HTML content. EPUB content uses web-based structures, but your reading system's implementation still needs testing.
Do not reverse the characters in a source sentence to “make it look right.” That may destroy the logical order and break copying, searching, or assistive reading. Diagnose the document and renderer instead.
Choose passages that mix directions
Test ordinary prose first, then passages containing English names, acronyms, dates, measurements, email addresses, or URLs. A page of one script can pass while mixed content fails.
For each example, check the full phrase rather than isolated characters. Does the number belong to the intended unit? Are the opening and closing punctuation marks around the correct material? Does a Latin abbreviation remain one readable sequence?
Compare with the source and, when possible, copy the passage into a suitable editor. If copying preserves the intended logical sequence but display is wrong, investigate direction and rendering. If the underlying content is wrong too, a font change or alignment toggle will not repair it.
Review numbers and punctuation in context
Do not expect every element in a right-to-left paragraph to run in the same direction. Number sequences, Latin text, and surrounding punctuation can behave differently. A visually unfamiliar order is a reason to verify, not to rearrange it by intuition.
Inspect parentheses, quotation marks, colons, minus signs, and slashes around mixed material. Check a date or reference as a whole: digits can be individually correct while their association with labels is confusing.
If you cannot read the target language, ask a competent reader to assess these samples. Visual symmetry alone cannot tell you whether the sequence conveys the intended meaning.
Check chapters, paragraphs, and bilingual passages
Open the table of contents and jump through several chapters. Inspect chapter headings, numbered lists, note references, and the transition between a paragraph and a Latin-language quotation. Check the order of pages or sections separately from the direction inside a paragraph.
For bilingual EPUBs, verify that you can tell which passage is original and which is translation. PDF Craft's bilingual output places translation after each original passage; it does not guarantee two parallel columns. Mixed direction can make this sequence harder to follow, especially with long paragraphs.
A file editor may need to inspect language declarations, paragraph direction, and publication structure. Language and direction are related but distinct settings. Do not assume that merely declaring a language fixes every layout issue, or that the translation service provides a manual direction-editing interface.
Test the actual destination reader
Use the device and application where you plan to finish the book. Change font size, test a suitable font, and inspect the mixed passages again. If a problem appears, open the identical file in another reader before deciding that its content is damaged.
Record the chapter, passage, reader version, device, and what changed. A screenshot can help describe display behavior, but retain the file and the text location so another reviewer can reproduce it.
See multilingual EPUB font checks if characters are missing, and EPUB compatibility review for broader validation. Keep the original and downloaded result together. A successful task or a valid EPUB package is useful evidence, but the final test is whether the target-language text reads in the correct order on the device that matters to you.
