In a light novel, a change of address can reveal more than a paragraph of explanation. A character who stops using a title, switches to a nickname, or becomes unusually formal may be signaling a change in relationship. Translation needs to carry those distinctions without making every exchange sound alike.
Start with the complete usable EPUB and a short list of the decisions you care about. Then review actual scenes rather than assuming that a natural opening page proves the whole volume works.
Separate the narrator's voice from dialogue
A playful first-person narrator, a formal explanation, and a terse conversation do not need the same English style. Before submitting, identify the broad pattern of the source. Does the narrator comment on events, or mostly describe them? Do characters speak in complete sentences or fragments?
A useful hypothetical instruction is: “Use natural conversational English for dialogue and retain the narrator's dry tone. Do not turn brief replies into explanatory speeches.” Keep it grounded in what the book actually does. If you ask for a uniformly formal voice, expect that preference to compete with informal character speech.
When reviewing, read a conversation as a scene. Check who speaks, who listens, and whether an interrupted thought remains interrupted. A sentence can be correct in isolation while sounding wrong for the character who says it.
Choose a policy for honorifics and character names
Decide whether to retain recurring honorifics, use an English title, or convey the relationship through wording. There is no single policy that fits every book. The important point is that your preference should be clear enough to evaluate.
List a few frequent names, titles, and fictional terms. Keep the source spelling beside your preference in your own notes so you can recognize different forms of address. Do not flatten a nickname and a formal title into one label if the contrast matters to the story.
In PDF Craft, enter concise preferences in the translation instructions field. These guide processing; they do not guarantee perfect consistency throughout the book. For a name or title that matters, search appearances in early and late chapters and check the relationship in context. See keeping character names consistent for a focused review method.
Treat illustrations and captions as separate checks
Open the source EPUB before translation. Confirm that illustrations are present and note whether text appears inside the artwork, below it as a caption, or in ordinary body paragraphs. These are different forms of content.
PDF Craft aims to retain EPUB images and reading structure where possible. Keeping an illustration does not mean lettering embedded in that image has been translated. Compare the artwork, caption, and nearby scene after download. If the image contains information needed to understand a joke or plot event, keep the original available rather than guessing from the surrounding translation.
Check illustration order as well as presence. A picture placed before the wrong scene can spoil or confuse the narrative even if the file opens normally.
Use bilingual output for deliberate comparison
In the Novel Translator, upload the EPUB, choose the target language, and select translation-only or bilingual output. The bilingual edition places the translation after each original passage. Download from the completed task and open it in your actual reader.
Try a dialogue-heavy scene and a long paragraph at your preferred font size. Bilingual reading can help you check names, jokes, and ambiguous replies, but it also adds scrolling. Translation-only may be more comfortable for continuous reading, with the original kept separately for questions.
New users receive trial credits, and translation is charged by usage. Consult Pricing for current rates and check file limits before submitting a large illustrated volume.
Review the scenes most likely to reveal problems
Use this short pass after download:
- Compare a scene with several speakers, checking attribution and omitted subjects.
- Check a formal introduction and a familiar conversation for differences in address.
- Read a joke, idiom, or emotional turning point against the original.
- Confirm chapter and scene breaks, illustration placement, and any notes.
- Search a recurring fictional term across distant chapters.
These checks do not turn automated output into a professionally reviewed edition. They help you decide whether the reading copy serves your purpose and where closer review is needed. The complete novel workflow covers preparation and long-file checks without promising unrestricted processing or perfect book-wide memory.
