A French PDF can look perfectly readable and still be awkward to translate. Its text may be stored as scanned images, its columns may come out in the wrong order, or a missing accent may change a word before translation begins. Start by checking the file, then judge the English against the French source rather than by fluency alone.
This workflow is for a document you already have: a book, report, paper, or manual. It produces content you can read and check; it does not promise an English replica of every printed page.
Find out what your PDF actually contains
Try selecting a sentence in the PDF and copying it into a plain-text editor. Repeat on a later page. If the text arrives in reading order with accents intact, you have a useful starting point. If nothing can be selected, or the pasted text is nonsense, recognition is needed.
Some PDFs mix both types. A report may contain searchable introductory pages and scanned appendices. Inspect a normal paragraph, a table, and a footnote-heavy page instead of assuming that the first page represents the whole file.
Keep the original unchanged. Give your working copy a practical name such as french-report-source.pdf, and record its edition or publication date. If you have an original EPUB of a book, use the EPUB translator rather than converting a PDF unnecessarily. EPUB already carries reading structure that a PDF conversion must reconstruct.
Check accents and terms before blaming the translation
French accents carry information. Compare a few words containing é, è, ê, ç, and œ with the page image. Watch for lost apostrophes, joined words, and a line-ending hyphen being treated as part of a word.
A scan that turns a name into a different sequence of letters may produce a plausible but wrong English rendering. Likewise, a company name or specialist abbreviation should not quietly become an ordinary noun.
Write a short instruction with context and preferences. For example:
This is a French museum catalogue. Translate into clear English. Keep artist names and catalogue reference numbers unchanged. Use “provenance” for the ownership history of an artwork.
These instructions guide translation; they do not enforce a terminology database or guarantee every occurrence. Keep a separate list of the five or ten terms you most need to verify afterward. Include their French forms so you can find them in the source.
Convert, translate, and download
In PDF Craft, upload the PDF, then choose an output that matches your next task. EPUB suits continued reading with adjustable text. Markdown suits editing, quotations, and notes. Neither should be chosen because you expect an exact reproduction of the printed layout.
Enable translation and select English. Review the output and translation settings before submitting: conversion alone is not the same as requesting an English version. Add your instructions, submit the task, and download the result when it finishes. Check Pricing for current usage rates before processing a long document.
Open the downloaded file in the application you actually plan to use. For EPUB, test a chapter jump and a change of font size. For Markdown, check heading levels and paragraph order in your editor. Keep the French PDF beside it during review.
Review numbers, quotations, and layout separately
A smooth English paragraph can hide a wrong amount. Build a small comparison sheet:
| Source detail | What to check in English |
|---|---|
1 250,50 | The numerical value is unchanged even if separators are adapted |
12/03/2024 | The intended day and month are clear, rather than silently reversed |
| A percentage or negative amount | The sign, decimal precision, and unit survive |
« … » and a speaker attribution | The quotation still belongs to the right speaker |
| A table with units in its heading | Values remain associated with the correct labels |
Do not automatically replace every decimal comma before understanding the context. A catalogue identifier, date, and measured quantity need different handling.
Read through a two-column page into the next page. Check that a caption has not interrupted the main sentence and that footnotes have not been inserted as ordinary paragraphs. Follow a few note references in EPUB; in Markdown, verify that each note's text can still be matched to its marker.
Decide what is ready to use
For private reading, you may accept a few awkward phrases once you understand the argument. A quotation, numerical claim, or specialist definition deserves a direct comparison with the source. For publication or a consequential decision, have the relevant passages checked by a qualified person.
If the English is wrong because the recognized French is wrong, retrying translation alone will not fix the cause. Return to a clearer source or correct the extracted text in an editor, then translate the corrected material using an appropriate workflow. Keep both versions so you can tell which change solved the problem.
