# How to Translate an Entire Ebook and Keep Reading

Prepare an ebook, choose an online, Calibre, or human translation route, then download and check the translated book before reading.

Translating an ebook passage by passage becomes tedious long before the final chapter. If you already have the complete EPUB, a file-based workflow is usually more practical: upload the book once, choose the language and output, then review a downloadable edition.

The important preparation is deciding what you need at the end. A reading copy, a bilingual study edition, and a book intended for publication require different amounts of checking. Choose the route around that result, rather than assuming every translation tool handles complete ebooks.

## Prepare a usable source file

Open the source in an EPUB reader before uploading it. Check chapter navigation, a few images, and any footnotes. If the source is already damaged, it is harder to tell whether a later problem came from translation.

Keep the untouched original and save new editions under distinct names. For example, `book-original.epub`, `book-spanish.epub`, and `book-bilingual.epub` tell you more than `download-final2.epub`. You do not need to modify internal EPUB files for PDF Craft's upload workflow.

Different inputs need different preparation:

* **EPUB:** start with the complete readable book. Check the current uploader limits.
* **Scanned PDF:** recover text and reading structure through OCR and conversion. A page image is not selectable ebook text. See the [scanned PDF to EPUB guide](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/blog/scanned-pdf-to-epub/).
* **A protected store purchase:** obtain a usable authorized edition. Having the book in a reader app does not mean you have an exportable EPUB.
* **An author manuscript:** keep the editable source available for revisions. A translated reading file does not replace the publishing source or editorial process.

## Choose between online translation, Calibre, and human work

| Route | Work you take on | When it fits |
| --------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| An online EPUB translator | Prepare the file and instructions, choose output, review the download | You want a complete reading edition without configuring a translation engine |
| Calibre with a translation plugin | Install and configure the plugin and chosen engine, check service terms and output | You already manage ebooks in Calibre and want control over the setup |
| A human translator and editor | Agree scope, terminology, revision process, and ebook production | Voice, publication, or a demanding subject needs sustained expert judgment |

Calibre's normal format conversion does not translate a book. The separate [Ebook Translator plugin](https://translator.bookfere.com/) provides translation through configured engines. A desktop interface also does not prove the translation is offline: data handling depends on the selected engine and settings.

For human work, agree on a sample and deliverable before the whole project. Ask whether the quote covers translation, revision, formatting, and final EPUB checks. “A translated manuscript” and “a ready-to-read EPUB” are different deliveries. Automated output can be useful for reading or as working material, but do not label it professionally reviewed unless that review actually happened.

## Translate an EPUB online with PDF Craft

1. **Upload the complete book** in the [EPUB translator](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/epub-translator/). You can complete the online task without installing the desktop app.
2. **Choose the target language.** Confirm the intended language rather than relying on the page you entered from; the URL does not choose task settings for you.
3. **Choose translation-only or bilingual output.** Translation-only is for reading just the new language. Bilingual output places each original passage before its translation, which helps with comparison but makes the book longer to navigate.
4. **Add concise instructions where needed.** State the subject and a few useful preferences, such as “Use Latin American Spanish, keep character names unchanged, and use a conversational tone.” These requests guide the translation; review whether important wording was followed.
5. **Review the settings and submit.** New users receive trial credits, and processing is charged by usage. Check [Pricing](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/pricing/) for current rates.
6. **Download from the completed task.** Save the file somewhere you recognize, then open it in your preferred EPUB reader.

If you start with a PDF and choose EPUB or Markdown output, explicitly enable translation when another language is wanted. Conversion alone and translation are separate choices for those outputs.

## Review a few deliberate samples before settling in

Do not rely on a quick scroll through the opening pages. Choose samples that test different risks: a conversation, a paragraph with a number or negative, a technical explanation, and a note. Check a chapter near the middle and another near the end.

For meaning, ask whether the speaker, action, and qualification remain the same. A missing “not,” a changed date, or an incorrect pronoun can matter more than an awkward adjective. For recurring terms, search several appearances instead of checking only the first definition.

For structure, open the table of contents and follow entries. Change the font size to reveal clipped text or unusual wrapping. Follow a footnote and check its return path. Compare image captions and the text around a chapter boundary with the original.

| Problem found | Useful next action |
| ------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| A name changes between chapters | Review recurring occurrences and clarify the preference before another task |
| A passage is difficult to understand | Compare its original context rather than guessing from the translation alone |
| Navigation or notes are broken | Check the source EPUB and try another reader to distinguish file and display problems |
| Publication quality is needed | Arrange qualified revision and production checks before distribution |

Once the file passes those checks, continue reading in your usual app or use [PDF Craft Desktop](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/download/) to read and organize the original and translation. Keep the original close enough to consult when a passage needs a second look.
