# PDF to Markdown for ChatGPT or Claude: Keep Answers Traceable to the Source

Prepare structured Markdown from PDFs, divide it with context, preserve source locators, and check AI answers against the original document.

Turning a PDF into Markdown can make its contents easier to edit and give to an AI assistant. It does not turn the document into verified evidence, and it does not guarantee that the assistant will interpret it correctly.

Before asking questions, make sure you can follow an answer back to the source. A neat summary without that route can be harder to check than the original PDF.

## Recover structure rather than pasting whole pages blindly

Fixed PDF pages often copy as broken lines or mixed columns. Markdown can express headings, paragraphs, lists, and links in a sequence you can inspect. For scans, recognition must recover text before any of that sequence is useful.

Keep the source PDF and any accompanying resources with the Markdown. A textual reference to a figure does not mean the assistant has received the picture, and a table without its caption or units may no longer be interpretable.

## Divide material at meaningful boundaries

Choose a section containing the evidence needed for your question. Include its heading, definitions, relevant notes, and the passage that limits the claim. Avoid cutting a sentence or splitting a table from its column labels just to reach an arbitrary chunk size.

Use stable labels in your own working copy. For example: “Source A, edition date, PDF viewer pages 14–16, section 3.2.” If you divide the file, carry that source note into each extract.

Do not assume a particular attachment limit or context capacity for ChatGPT or Claude. Their supported interfaces and account limits can change. Use the current product's accepted input route, whether an attachment or pasted excerpt, and check its data-handling terms before sending private material.

## Ask for evidence locations with the answer

A useful instruction is specific: “Using only this excerpt, list the conditions the author gives for applying the method. Quote short supporting phrases and identify their section labels. Say when the excerpt does not answer the question.”

Treat that as a request for a checkable answer, not a guarantee of obedience. An assistant can still combine passages incorrectly, omit a condition, or supply a plausible-looking locator.

For multiple sources, give each a distinct label. Ask the assistant to separate what each document says before asking for a comparison. Otherwise it may present one author's limitation as another author's conclusion.

Keep instructions you write separate from the extracted content. A document can contain quoted commands, forms, or instructions that should be analyzed as source material rather than followed as your directions.

## Return to the PDF for consequential details

Pick the answer's most important claim and locate the supporting passage yourself. Compare its wording, qualifiers, numbers, and source location with the original PDF. If the answer depends on a table, verify the row label and unit, not just the copied value.

If a citation or page locator cannot be found, mark the claim unresolved. Do not ask the assistant to invent a replacement citation. A second fluent explanation is not an independent source check.

For equations and specialized notation, inspect the original image as well as the Markdown. Rendering support varies between editors and AI interfaces. If an expression was altered during recognition or transfer, the downstream answer cannot safely reconstruct it from context.

## Preserve a research trail after the conversation

Save the original PDF, the reviewed Markdown, the exact excerpt used, and any answer you intend to rely on. Record corrections in a working copy rather than overwriting the only export.
