# Translate a German PDF to English and Check the Layout

Identify text and scanned German PDFs, add terminology instructions, and review English output for long sentences, numbers, and fixed-page layout.

A German PDF with selectable text and a faded scan of a German manual need different preparation. Both can eventually produce English, but the scan also needs recognition. If the source sequence is wrong, a fluent English paragraph may hide the mistake.

Start with a few representative pages and decide whether you need a translated PDF, a reflowable reading copy, or editable text.

## Check whether the German text can be extracted

Select a sentence in the body and paste it into a plain-text editor. Compare the pasted sequence with the page. Try a page with columns, a table, or notes rather than relying only on the title page.

If the page behaves as a single image, recognition is needed. If selectable words paste incorrectly, the text layer may also need attention. Mixed documents can contain both kinds of page.

In a scan, inspect umlauts, ß, small punctuation, and letters close to binding shadows. Mark unclear passages before translation. A confident English result does not tell you whether a faint source word was recognized correctly.

The [scanned PDF translation guide](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/blog/translate-scanned-pdf/) covers that input problem in more detail.

## Give context for long sentences and specialist terms

German technical or administrative prose can contain long sentences with several conditions. Ask for clear English without dropping qualifications, rather than asking for aggressive shortening.

For example: “This is an engineering report. Use standard English terminology for the field, keep product names and equation variables unchanged, and retain all conditions in long sentences.” Replace the field with the actual subject and add a few preferred term equivalents when you know them.

PDF Craft's translation instructions guide wording. They do not guarantee document-wide consistency or replace expert review. If a compound term repeats, inspect several occurrences in the English result rather than checking only its first appearance.

Watch negation and exceptions in context. Words such as “nicht,” “kein,” and “nur” can affect the scope of a requirement. If you cannot verify a consequential passage, have someone with the relevant language and subject knowledge review it.

## Select English and the output that fits the task

Upload the file to [PDF Craft](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/pdf-craft/) and choose the output. Select PDF when you want PDF translation. For EPUB or Markdown, enable translation and set English as the target language. Add your instructions and review the task plan before starting.

EPUB is useful for continuous reading and adjustable text. Markdown is useful for editing and notes. Neither is a promise to reproduce the original fixed page. Retain the German PDF for illustrations and page references.

After processing, download the result from the completed task. The online workflow does not require the desktop app. Check [Pricing](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/pricing/) for current charges and the current upload settings before submitting a large document.

## Review numbers and layout together

Compare values with their labels and units. German and English documents may use punctuation differently in numbers, so verify the quantity from context before changing separators. Dates and identifiers can also look like decimal values when stripped of surrounding text.

Inspect headings, table cells, and footnotes where English wording has changed length. Look for clipped endings, overly small text, overlapping lines, and references that no longer point to the right place.

Choose at least one ordinary page, one dense page, and a page near the end. Check the last line of a paragraph and the first line after a page break. A clean first page does not establish the whole document's reading order.

If your purpose is formal submission or a legally significant use, check the required standard of translation and review separately. An English PDF produced online is not automatically a certified translation.

## Keep a traceable reviewed copy

Save the original, untouched export, and any corrected version with distinct names. Record disputed terms by source page and paragraph opening so another person can find them even if pagination changes.

For choosing between tools before you start, use the [PDF translator comparison](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/blog/pdf-translator-comparison/). For this document, the final decision should rest on the actual result: the English meaning, the numbers, and the layout relationships you inspected against the German original.
