# EPUB or PDF for Translation? Choose by the Book and the Result You Need

Compare reflowable EPUB and fixed-page PDF, scanned and text input, complex illustrations, and reading devices before choosing a translation workflow.

If you have both a PDF and an EPUB of the same book, start with the one that already represents the reading experience you need. A prose book for your phone and a diagram-heavy manual for a large screen do not have the same requirements.

The choice is not a universal ranking of file extensions. It is a decision about text structure, source quality, and what you will do with the translation.

## Reflow and fixed pages solve different problems

A typical reflowable EPUB lets your reader wrap text around the current screen and font size. A PDF preserves page geometry. That makes EPUB convenient for sustained reading and PDF useful when the position of a diagram, caption, or annotation matters.

There are exceptions. EPUB supports fixed-layout publications too, so an `.epub` extension does not prove that text will reflow. The [W3C EPUB specification](https://www.w3.org/TR/epub-33/) distinguishes these publication types. Open the actual file and change the font size before assuming how it behaves.

Translation also changes text length. A heading that fit on one line may wrap; a fixed box may not have room for the translated sentence. A flexible reading layout can accommodate longer prose without preserving the original page count. That is a feature when reading comfort matters more than page matching.

## Separate the input format from the quality of its text

A PDF can contain real text, scanned page images, or both. Try copying a paragraph and reading the pasted result. Recognizable words in the correct order are a better sign than simply being able to select something.

An image-only scan needs OCR before its words can be translated as text. A damaged text layer can also produce mistakes. Neither problem is solved by renaming the file or converting it repeatedly between formats.

An existing EPUB may already contain chapters, navigation, and styled text. If it opens correctly, translating it directly avoids reconstructing those features from a PDF. Conversely, a poor EPUB assembled from page pictures is not automatically a better source than a clear, text-based PDF.

## Match the source to your intended use

| Situation | Sensible starting point | What to inspect |
| --------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Novel or prose-heavy book for a phone | Original reflowable EPUB | Chapter order, names, notes, paragraph flow |
| Scanned book with no other edition | PDF recognition and conversion | OCR, reading order, missing pages |
| Illustrated manual with spatial labels | Retain the PDF as a reference | Diagram labels, captions, cross-references |
| Material for editing and research notes | PDF-to-Markdown workflow where appropriate | Headings, formulas, table relationships, citations |
| Bilingual comparison during reading | EPUB with alternating original and translation | Passage alignment and comfortable font size |

Large tables and diagrams deserve attention whichever format you choose. A correct table can still be awkward on a narrow screen. Text embedded in an image may not behave like ordinary text; inspect important labels directly.

## Choose the output for how you will use the book

[PDF Craft's EPUB translator](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/epub-translator/) accepts a whole EPUB and offers translation-only or bilingual output. Bilingual output places the translation after each original passage. It is not a promise of fixed parallel columns.

For a PDF, use the [PDF workspace](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/pdf-craft/) and review the actual output and translation settings. EPUB suits a reading edition; Markdown suits editing and reuse. Conversion does not automatically mean translation, so enable it and select your target language when needed.

Check [Pricing](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/pricing/) before processing. Do not assume one file type has a fixed lower cost or finishes in a fixed time. Source complexity, processing choices, and the work you do afterward all affect the practical comparison.

## Test the result on the device that matters

Before accepting the file, jump to a middle chapter, enlarge the font, inspect an illustration, and follow a note. Compare a paragraph spanning a source page or column boundary. For technical content, check numbers, units, formulas, and their surrounding explanation.

Retain the original even if the translated file is comfortable to read. Reflowed page positions are not printed-page citations, and a smooth translation may still need checking. If you already have a sound EPUB, avoid a PDF detour. If PDF is the only source, choose the output that helps you read or edit the recovered content rather than expecting an extension to settle the decision.
