# Images and Captions in a Translated EPUB: What to Check

Distinguish image resources from embedded lettering, inspect translated captions and nearby text, and isolate reader-specific display problems.

An illustration can survive translation while the relationship around it breaks. A caption may move away from the image, a reference may point to the wrong figure, or lettering inside the artwork may remain in the source language. Check those as separate questions.

Keep the original EPUB for comparison. Its existing image size, placement, and text arrangement establish what was present before processing.

## Separate the image from the text inside it

An EPUB image is a resource. A caption below it may be ordinary text, while labels within the picture are pixels. Preserving the resource does not mean every embedded word has been recognized and translated.

Before submission, inspect a representative diagram or illustration. Identify which information is body text, caption text, and artwork. If the artwork contains a plot clue, a labeled axis, or instructions needed to understand the page, keep the original available during reading.

PDF Craft aims to retain EPUB images and reading structure where possible. It does not promise translation of every word inside EPUB images. Do not infer that capability from OCR support for scanned PDFs; those are different input and processing situations.

## Check captions as part of the explanation

After download, compare a figure number, its caption, and the sentence that refers to it. The words can read well individually while naming the wrong figure or reversing the relationship described.

For example, in a hypothetical chart with two lines, check whether the caption still identifies which one represents the baseline. For a novel illustration, verify that the caption or nearby text remains associated with the intended scene. These are suggested checks, not claimed test results.

If a caption contains a specialist term, compare its treatment with the body. A consistent preference in the instructions can help communicate the intended wording, but it does not remove the need to inspect important occurrences.

## Judge relative position rather than printed pages

A reflowable EPUB changes pagination when font size, screen width, or language length changes. An image appearing on a different screen is not by itself a failure. The more useful question is whether it remains in a sensible relationship to its caption and surrounding passage.

Check just before and after the illustration. Is a sentence cut off? Does the caption appear twice? Has an image inserted between a source paragraph and its translation made bilingual reading confusing?

Test a long passage around an image, not just a full-page illustration. Text expansion is more likely to reveal awkward spacing in mixed content. For wider structural checks, use the [EPUB format guide](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/blog/translate-epub-preserve-formatting/).

## Compare display settings and readers

Open the downloaded EPUB at your normal font size and in the appearance mode you use. Inspect image scaling, caption contrast, and the ability to read small labels. If zooming is necessary, check that it works in your actual app.

Try the same location in another compatible reader when an image is clipped, missing, or unexpectedly stretched. Compare the source in both readers too. That distinguishes a source problem, an output problem, and reader-specific behavior more effectively than repeatedly downloading the book.

| Symptom | First comparison |
| --------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Image absent everywhere | Source resource and the downloaded output |
| Image clipped in one app | Same file in another reader and its display settings |
| Caption differs from body wording | Source meaning, figure reference, and term preference |
| Lettering remains untranslated | Whether the text is embedded in the image |

## Keep useful issue notes

Record the chapter, figure number, caption phrase, and what differs. Page numbers are less portable across reflowable readers. Keep the downloaded result unchanged while investigating, and edit only a working copy if an external repair is appropriate.

For a file that will not open or has broader display problems, follow [EPUB troubleshooting](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/blog/translated-epub-troubleshooting/). Check language accuracy separately from resource presence; a correctly displayed diagram is not proof that its explanation is correct.

To start a translation, use the [EPUB translator](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/epub-translator/), choose the target language and output, and download the completed task. Translation is charged by usage, with trial credits for new users; current rates are on [Pricing](https://pdfcraft.ai/en/pricing/). Keep the original alongside the reading edition so visual details remain easy to verify.
